What to Expect in Sessions

We know that it can be really difficult to recognise and accept when you or someone you care about needs some extra help and to find the right sort of support. You’ve already taken the first step on that journey by reading this.

At Pathways, you will find expertise, professionalism, kindness and an approach that prioritises non-judgmental practice. One of the most important things for us to understand is your perspective and what is important to you (or whoever is accessing therapy) on this journey. It can be difficult to know this, especially if you have struggled with something for a while, so if you’re not sure then the first step is to figure that out, which we can certainly help you with too! We can make sense of the difficulties together so that we can find the best way to help you.

Explore the Pathways therapeutic approach

Evidence based and effective therapeutic methods are used to improve self-understanding, support people in resolving the difficulties that they are experiencing and feel good about themselves. It might be that you have struggled with something for as long as you can remember or you have encountered something more recently. Everyone has their own story and everyone is unique.

Coping with overwhelming feelings of sadness, anger, pain, fear, guilt or shame (and many more) can be incredibly difficult but learning to cope in healthy ways and resolving the difficulties that triggered the feelings is something that you don’t have to face alone.

Calm and mindfulness

We offer a free 30 minute initial consultation to give you the time to tell us about the challenges facing you and to support you in deciding what the most helpful next steps are for you or your family. If you decide that you would like to work with us, then we can book the first session during this initial consultation. The first session is focused on the client/s and the therapist getting to know each other a little, thinking together about the challenges, identifying strengths and superpowers and beginning to make sense of the difficulties in order to plan a way forward collaboratively.

Sessions and the sharing of information will be taken at a pace that suits you or your loved one. It may be that much more time needs to be taken to develop trust or confidence before talking or thinking about the difficulties and we are happy to focus on this stage to enable you or your loved one to engage, feel confident and get the most out of therapy. For us, connection and feeling safe in the therapeutic relationship is the foundation.
