Conversation can be powerful! We’re born with a drive to communicate and to be understood. In a therapeutic relationship, most importantly, someone is listening to – or receiving – what we communicate in an active way. Through this conversation, we can start to ‘detangle’ our thoughts and feelings, make sense of our experiences and open up new possibilities.
In therapy, talking/communication also takes place within a different kind of relationship. It can be a really helpful experience to talk with someone who isn’t actively involved in your life in any other way than to listen without judgement and to support you to get to where you want to be.
That said, therapy is not always only talking. Therapy can involve drawing, playing and ‘doing’ in different ways; for example, trying out strategies or testing out ideas.
It is also important that the gains you make through therapy go beyond the therapy room – whether that’s by you carrying new ideas and understandings with you or putting things into practice in different areas of your life.
